Is CBD Oil Addictive?.

This is one of the most common CBD questions, and a good one to ask before you try out any new substance. Early and ongoing research shows that CBD has a ton of potential for helping us live our best lives, and may be able to help people find some relief from everything from anxiety and seizures to chronic pain and sleep troubles. And while CBD is legal and available for purchase without a prescription, it’s also part of the cannabis plant, so asking about its potentially addictive qualities is important.

Here’s what we know.

Is CBD Oil Habit Forming?

So, is CBD oil habit forming? The short answer is no, but this isn’t quite 100% definitive yet because there is still research that needs to be conducted.

CBD oil is a chemical compound that is harvested from cannabis similar to its close cousin, marijuana, which although not physically addicting, can become habit forming for some people. The biggest difference for why people may develop a habit with marijuana but not with CBD comes down to the differences between CBD and THC.

THC, which is the main psychoactive property in marijuana, shares many qualities with CBD, including interacting with the body’s mood, appetite, and metabolic receptors. A major difference however is that THC creates a feeling of being “high,” which users will not experience with CBD. The psychoactive properties of THC are often what’s so habit-forming about it, even though the high itself can vary from strain to strain and over time.

Because CBD does not produce any noticeable psychoactive effects, however, it is very unlikely to be habit forming. And, according to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.”

Additional Benefits of CBD

Both CBD and THC may be able to offer profound therapeutic benefits, but because CBD doesn’t produce the “high” that THC produces, it’s a much better alternative for anyone who is worried about potentially becoming dependent on it. That’s good news for those who have had a previously negative experience with THC, as well as for people ( and pets!) of all ages who are looking for a safe and effective means of relief.

Some of the additional benefits of CBD may include:

  • Reduced inflammation in the body
  • Support for treatment of migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, and other conditions that are difficult to manage with standard medications
  • Heart-protecting antioxidants

CBD also shares some well-known benefits with THC, including potential relief from nausea, pain, depression, and anxiety.
